My name is Judy Rowlands (married to Steve, an Elder in the Presbyterian Church in NSW) and we worship at Caringbah Presbyterian Church in Sydney’s south and we run ESL classes at our church on Thursday mornings.
I taught ESL professionally at TAFE for many years and prior to that I taught English and German in High Schools. I resigned from my paid work at TAFE at the end of 2008 because I am convicted that the church should be more obedient to the Word of God at this point in time. We are not doing sufficient to address the challenges inherent in the markedly changed, multi-cultural society that is Australia in the 21st century.
With the continuing increase in Australia of the migrant population, there is an incredible need for ESL classes, particularly here in Sydney. ESL is a major focus for the government, and private industry is now increasingly jumping on board in order to make lots of money, but I feel that the Church should be at the forefront (not the tail end!) as it is an important mercy ministry. It also presents a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate the love of Jesus and share the message of the Bible.
We are commanded in God’s Word:
“When a foreigner lives with you in your land, you shall treat the foreigner who lives with you as if he were a native among you, and you shall love him as yourself. I am the Lord your God.” (Lev. 19:33-34)
“God, your God, is immense and powerful. He takes loving care of foreigners … and you must treat foreigners with the same loving care.” (Deut. 10:17-19)
Yours in Christ, and in His service,
